My Pioneer Mother
My Pioneer Mother
At evening, she heard the coo-hoo
of the burrowing owls
as they called from the edge
of prairie dog holes;
Saw the color of thistles
lavender in the late sun,
deepening into purple
with the coming twilight;
Smelled the fresh air of dusk
with its crinkle of pink-veined mallow
growing wild
along the fence rows;
Tasted the dampness of night
heavy with lake water dews;
And, after the wind had died,
she lit the cow chip fire
to sit cross-legged
within the circle of its warmth,
for she was pleased
with this new land
